Annapurna South Expedition

Trip Overview

The Annapurna is a massif that contains one peak over 8,000 meters (26,000 ft), thirteen peaks over 7,000 meters (23,000 ft), and sixteen more over 6,000 meters (20,000 ft).  The massif is 55 kilometers (34 mi) long, and is bounded by the Kali Gandaki Gorge on the west, the Marshyangdi River on the north and east, and by Pokhara Valley on the south.

Annapurna 1 main is the tenth highest mountain in the World at 8091 m above sea level, which is situated in Nepal . It was the first 8000 m mountain to be  climbed.  Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, of a French expedition led by Herzog , reached the summit on 3 June 1950. They explored the Kali Gandaki valley.  After descending Dhaulagiri became too difficult, they turned their attention to climbing Annapurna. Hampered by inaccurate maps, they spent considerable time and effort finding a way to the foot of the mountain. They eventually ascended via Miristi Khola to the north face of mount Annapurna 1. Its summit was the highest summit attained for three years, until the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. Annapurna was not climbed again until 1970, when British army expedition followed essentially the same route as Herzog. At same time Cris Boning led successful British expedition to the very steep and difficult south face. With only 109 ascents, Annapurna has had fewer successful climbs than any other 8000 m peak.

Our trip is an expedition to Annapurna south which at 7219 meters is an attractive mountain that is located north of Pokhara, in the heart of Annapurna Himalayan Ranges. Annapurna South rises miraculously as a part of a wide ridge that forms an amazing wall including Annapurna I 8091m, Annapurna II 7937m, Annapurna III 7555m, Annapurna IV 7525m and Gangapurna 7455m. The holy mountain Machhapuchre (Fish-Tail) 6997m is also an important peak that lies within Annapurna Himalayan Range.  Climbers can expect spectacular views of Manaslu, Tilicho Peak, Annapurna range and Machapuchre.

The summit of Annapurna South was first ascended in 1964 by a Japanese Expedition team via North Ridge. The climb of Annapurna South is considered difficult and technically challenging with steep sections on the summit ridge as well as traversing of steep and slippery slopes below the summit. Hence, previous experience of technical peak climbing with good level of physical fitness is highly recommended by Nepal Guide Treks and Expeditions for those wanting to conquer the summit of Annapurna South.
